Dissertation Format Options. The graduate faculty adopted a policy that allows students two options for the dissertation format. In addition to the traditional volume-length dissertation, students may negotiate with their committee for multiple (minimum of two) journal articles. The doctoral preliminary and final oral examination committees must consist of at least four members, including the advisor(s). All members of the committees and the candidate must participate. At least three members (including the advisor) must be from your major field. At least one member must represent a field outside the major.
Earlier dissertations and theses may be accessed onsite in paper form, or through interlibrary loan, or through the online Digital Dissertations database. Check the University Libraries catalog for holdings information or contact the University of Minnesota Archives for these earlier works.
If the journal format is selected, then the final dissertation submitted to the committee, and eventually to the Graduate School, must also include: a revised dissertation proposal which includes any changes required by the committee after the Preliminary Oral Examination along with a revision of the methodology section to describe the procedures actually used.
